In a misguided attempt to boost employee morale, the Dum-E Company organized a downhill soapbox derby race and company picnic. This annual event, running from 1992 to 1999, became infamous due to the surprisingly frequent injuries and the chorus of employee complaints that followed each year.
The 5th annual race achieved a peculiar level of notoriety. Attendees received a commemorative T-shirt featuring a design clearly inspired by the wild and imaginative artwork of the legendary hot rod artist, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. These shirts became highly sought after by some. To top it off, the company boasted about serving "The best damn potato salad you've ever had." The vintage design featuring a cartoon monkey driving a hot rod is particularly memorable.
