In the late 1960's the Dum-E toys division, in order to capitalize on the popularity of their at the time brand new superhero, "Secret Sphynx", developed a toy ray gun modeled after the characters signature side arm. Boasting real light up action, the toy became a hot ticket item for the Christmas of 1968.
The toy was quickly recalled however, as a manufacturing mishap, in which experimental military grade technology was used in place of the toys light up tip. This resulted in the ray gun firing an actual laser beam!
Fortunately no children were harmed, but many a family Christmas tree was vaporized before Dum-E had realized their embarrassing mistake.
